Field Trip to ARIES Metal Workshop, by Alexandra Perkins

The field trip to Aries was really educational and interesting. I knew we were going to a metal working shop, but I didn’t know what to expect beyond that. I thought it was really beneficial that we got to see the whole process this company goes through when manufacturing a piece from start to finish and all the steps in between.

At first I was a little confused about where we were going when I woke up on the bus and looked out the window to see we were in what seemed like the middle of nowhere! However, once we walked around the corner to all the warehouses it made more sense, especially for a metal working shop. Paolo and the actual owner seemed really friendly. My favorite part of the field trip was probably learning about all the process work Paolo does on the designs before the metal workers can even begin to make the product. I enjoyed seeing all his various drawings he does both by hand and on computer programs to make sure the design and the construction of the design are clear to the clients as well as his workers.

The tour of the facility was really neat too. I had no idea how welding worked other than melting metals together. So it was cool to learn about the three different types of welding. My favorite is the TIG welding which is used for seamless connections. I liked seeing smaller project Aries does; the more refined and detail-oriented pieces. I also thought it was really impressive to hear that they have done work for big name clients like Prada and Gucci.

I think the biggest thing I learned from the field trip was all the various things you can do with metal and welding. I knew it was used for making strong structure but I didn’t realize just how sturdy it can make structures; while at the same time it can also be used to make clean seamless edges to create really beautiful artistic pieces.
